Philodendron Pink Princess — Iconic Variegated Aroid
The Philodendron erubescens ‘Pink Princess’ is one of the most famous and sought-after philodendrons worldwide. Known for its dramatic black-green foliage painted with streaks, speckles, and sectors of bubblegum-pink variegation, each leaf emerges as a one-of-a-kind work of art. With proper care, the Pink Princess produces larger leaves over time, and when supported on a moss pole, the plant can climb and mature into a striking specimen.
Growth Habit
-
Type: Climbing tropical aroid.
-
Mature Size: Indoors, vines can grow 4–6 feet or more with support. Leaves typically range from 4–8 inches, enlarging as the plant climbs.
-
Foliage: Dark green to nearly black leaves variegated with pink, cream, and sometimes light green.
-
Growth Rate: Moderate; grows faster in high humidity and warmth.
Care & Cultivation
-
Light: Needs bright, indirect light to maintain pink variegation. Too little light leads to reduced pink; too much sun can scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Consistent moisture is best, but never let it sit in soggy soil.
-
Soil: A chunky, well-draining aroid mix with perlite, bark, and sphagnum moss.
-
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives at 70–85°F with 60–80% humidity. Benefits from a humidifier indoors.
-
Fertilization: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer at half strength.
-
Support: Provide a moss pole or climbing support to encourage upright growth and larger, more dramatic foliage.
-
Propagation: Propagates from stem cuttings, though maintaining stable pink variegation takes careful selection.
Why It’s Special
The Pink Princess is considered a “grail plant” for many collectors, thanks to its striking color contrast and unique variegation. No two leaves are alike, making every plant a living piece of artwork.
Our Growing Practices
Most of our plants are cultivated here in the USA, grown from cuttings or tissue culture. This ensures strong genetics, healthy plants, and a reliable source for collectors who want to add rare, tropical climbing philodendrons to their collection.
