Wooly Kate Yellow Tomato — Heirloom, Rare
About the Variety
Wooly Kate Yellow is a rare yellow segregation of the “Wooly Kate” line, discovered in an F3 generation garden. It combines striking visual traits with distinctive texture. The fruits are round “cocktail” size (around 40–60 grams), with a rich yellow epidermis that is splashed or mottled with indigo-black, especially around the shoulders. Inside, the flesh is juicy and light yellow. The plant itself is just as eye-catching, with softly fuzzy “woolly” foliage that gives it a unique silvery appearance in the garden.
Growth Habit
Type: Indeterminate growth — continues producing throughout the season.
Maturity: Mid-season.
Plant Size: Moderate development, reaching about 2 meters under good conditions.
Foliage: Regular but woolly, with the fuzz being one of this variety’s defining traits.
Care & Cultivation
Starting Seeds: Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the expected last frost. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are hardened and the soil is warm.
Spacing: Allow 18–24 inches between plants for airflow and vigor.
Light: Needs full sun (6–8+ hours). The indigo splashing is most intense with good sunlight exposure.
Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with added organic matter.
Watering: Deep, consistent watering supports fruit set and prevents splitting. Avoid wetting leaves when possible.
Support: Use trellises, stakes, or cages early, as vines will become heavy.
Fertilization: Begin with balanced nutrients, then shift toward potassium and phosphorus during flowering and fruiting.
Our Growing Practices
All of our plants are cultivated here in the USA, grown from seed, cuttings, or tissue culture. This ensures strong genetics, healthy plants, and a reliable source for gardeners who want to add heirloom or rare varieties to their collection.
